Travel Tips

Recent airport security measures designed to enhance your safety have also changed the check-in expierence. We hope these tips will help minimize unnecessary turbulence as you head for your plane.

  1. Book air reservations in advance, especially during peak travel periods
  2. A government issued identification must be presented for the airline ticket agents to issue you a boarding pass. Please have your identification easily accessible for the ticket agent and security check point.
  3. Most airlines require you to check-in two hours prior to your departure time. Allowing two hours will give you enough time for check-in and the security screening process, plus it will eliminate any anxiety if there are long lines.
  4. Keep your check-in bags fit and trim, and under the airlines’ maximum weight allowance of 50 pounds.
  5. Do not lock your check-in baggage. Airlines allow only one carry-on bag plus one personal item (such as a laptop, purse, briefcase or camera case).
  6. Pack photo film in your carry-on bags. The equipment that screens check-in luggage can be hazardous to undeveloped film.
  7. Put all personal items in clear plastic bags when you pack. This will minimize handling of those items by baggage screeners.
  8. Label your luggage, including your laptop computer, with identification tags.
  9. When flying to the U.S. Mainland from Hawaii, before you head to the ticket counter your check-in luggage will need to go through the U.S. Department of Agicultural baggage inspection station, located near the ticket lobby entrance. USDA regulates the export of flowers, fruit and other plant materials from Hawaii. All fruits, flowers and other plant material without proper USDA certification will be confiscated.
  10. To help speed up the security check-point process, avoid clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories that contain metal, which could set off the alarm. Put all metal items in your carry-on bag, including coins, keys, mobile phones, pagers and PDAs or place them in the containers provided at the security checkpoint.
